A partial denture is a denture made to replace a few missing teeth whilst a complete denture is to replace all the teeth within a single dental arch (jaw). Individual or groups of missing teeth are replaced with teeth of matching shade and shape; and these are supported by a gum coloured material which is acrylic. Acrylic is a tried and tested material which mimics gingiva colour well and is robust.
Acrylic is easily repairable and adapted as well as being adjusted to improve strength and retention capacity by adding claps to provide a perfect fitting aesthetic denture.
Flexible dentures are ideal for replacing a few teeth where there is tooth and mucosa support. The main drawback of flexible dentures is that the material is not easily repairable, nor is it as aesthetic as acrylic. It is also more difficult or nearly impossible to add teeth dentures made from a flexible material.

These dentures are lighter, thinner and stronger than acrylic dentures and benefits include better temperature conduction so less noticeable for patients as well as providing better taste for patients as less of the mouth is covered.
Many patients who have an acrylic denture they can’t get on with choose this option and find it preferable. We rarely come across a patient changing from a chrome cobalt denture to an acrylic denture.
Complete dentures can also have chrome cobalt elements to them.
Upper:
A complete upper denture with full cobalt chrome palatal coverage. This allows for temperature conduction and is thinner than acrylic so better food or drink experience.
Lower:
A complete lower denture combines cobalt chrome elements into the framework to provide improved strength.
These dentures are perfect for those patients who are known to break their dentures!
Implant dentures are retained or supported by dental implants; the denture will look very similar to a conventional denture however much smaller so doesn’t trigger patient gag reflexes. The significant advantage is the retention and stability of the denture through implants rather than natural suction and muscle support. These are perfect for patients with little bone support.

Dentures do occasionally break from over use, material fatigue and being dropped! Most dentures can be repaired but we at Toplabs prosthetics provide health checks on old dentures and assess whether future breakage can be avoided or if a new denture is required.
Some repairs are more complex than others but we endeavour to meet our dentist and patients needs by providing denture additions and repair services in a 24-48 hour period. However if a cobalt-chrome framework has broken then we will need more time as we will require to remove the acrylic and teeth to access the metal framework to ensure a quality repair.
Alternatively, if the denture isn’t fitting well following extractions or as the patients mouth changes we offer relines and rebases. Our denture health checks will assess the condition of the dentures and weather relining is feasible. While it might be possible to reline your dentures if the teeth are heavily worn and teeth are not meeting perfect then simply relining might not achieve what you are hoping for – remembering relining or rebasing is irreversible ! In these cases our health checks carried out by GDC registered dental technicians will advise having new dentures made.
At Toplabs prosthetics we endeavour to be at the forefront of technology and scientific research as well as investing in our staff and equipment – continuing advancements in denture provision technology have enabled us to scan an impression digitally and design a tooth positions using software, rather than making a conventional mould. From this design, there are various methods of producing the denture, including:

-
Denture Base Milled from a Solid Blank of Material, in Which Teeth Are Then Set
-
Upper or Lower Dentures Printed through 3D-Printing Techniques
-
Whole Denture Milled out of a Block of 2-Coloured Material (Gum and Tooth Colours)
